Community Stories: Uncle Jimmy 2/19/2006
Born and raised in Seattle, James Mar has spent many of his 91 years working out of his family`s store in the International District. The YICK FUNG Co., established in 1910, is a restaurant supply store that also acted as an unofficial social service agency to new Chinese immigrants. 90 years later, James carries on the tradition of helping his community. As the only funeral director for the Chinese community, James, or “Uncle Jimmy” can be counted on to help the folks in need. Reflecting on his life and the International District, James Mar is living history and a neighborhood institution.

Homemade Chemical Free Cleaner Recipe
Mix 1/2 cup vinegar and 1/4 cup baking soda (or 2 teaspoons borax) into 1/2 gallon (2 liters) water. Store and keep. Use for removal of water deposit stains on shower stall panels, bathroom chrome fixtures, windows, bathroom mirrors, etc.
Another alternative is microfiber cloths which lift off dirt, grease and dust without the need for cleaning chemicals, because they are formulated to penetrate and trap dirt. There are a number of different brands. A good quality cloth can last for several years.

The Women by Clare Boothe Luce
Sharpen your claws: In this super-stylish, venomously funny 1930s comedy, a baker’s dozen of Seattle’s top actresses play a group of gleefully backstabbing women who confront marriage, gossip, divorce and friendship—all over a manicure. Mountain Biking
Did you know that when I-5 was constructed it essentially created a dividing line between the Eastlake and Capitol Hill neighborhoods. Over the years, trash, weeds and transients took over the area underneath the freeway. Now with the I-5 Colonnade mountain bike skills park, the area is cleaned up and inviting. Residents from the once separated neighborhoods are able to the take the trails under the freeway to visit shops and restaurants that they used to need a car to get too. Visit the Backcountry Bicycle Trails Club website to learn more about the park and the club. Also, check out the I-5 Colonnade Park Photo Gallery.

Neighborhood News
The Central Area Development Association (CADA), www.cada.org, is a Community Based Development Organization (CBDO) established to revitalize the Central Area of Seattle. The Central Area boundaries are defined as from (east to west) Lake Washington to 12th Ave. and from (north to south) Madison St. to the I-90 Lid or Massachusetts St. In the early 1990’s the current Seattle Mayor, Norman Rice, called a community summit to facilitate a discussion on a revitalization effort for the Central Area. The Central Area, adjacently southeast of downtown Seattle, was in distress. It had been suffering from years of abandonment from financial and business investors, which caused a number of other negative community issues to occur. The product of this summit was the Central Area Action Plan. The Central Area Action Plan specifically outlined areas of focus that were to be targeted to achieve the revitalization goals for the Central Area. In 1993, three organizations were created to implement those goals. CADA was one of those organizations. In 1994, CADA was incorporated as a non-profit corporation. Today, CADA is the only organization of the three that is still active in the community. This year marks CADA's 13th year of working towards it’s mission to enhance the economic vitality, affordability, and livability of the Central Area.
