Seattle Parks and Recreation’s Late Night Recreation Program at Asa Mercer Middle School relocates to Van Asselt Community Center

Starting Saturday, June 23, 2012, Seattle Parks and Recreation’s Late Night Recreation Program at Asa Mercer Middle School moves to Van Asselt Community Center. Van Asselt is located at 2820 S. Myrtle St. in the New Holly neighborhood.

Parks identified this as a strategic move, leveraging our physical resources to provide more recreational and community services opportunities to a neighborhood with a thriving youth population.

“Providing access, opportunity and sustainability in our services and recreation opportunities for community youth is a priority for Seattle Parks,” said Acting Parks Superintendent Christopher Williams. “Our transition to Van Asselt Community Center allows our Late Night Recreation program to expand and offer more services and space.”

The last day of programming at Asa Mercer Middle School is Saturday, June 16 and it picks up at Van Asselt on Saturday, June 23. Parks offers the Late Night Recreation program at Van Asselt on Saturday evenings from 7 p.m. – midnight. Late Night Recreation provides a safe, supervised, environment for teens ages 13-19 to socialize with friends, interact with staff and participate in a variety of formal and informal recreation and learning opportunities that build capacity and strengthen the developmental assets of participants.

Developmental assets are qualities young people develop as they grow, arising from positive experiences that help influence their choices and help them become caring, responsible, successful adults.
