Mayor Bruce Harrell, the Consul-General of Japan in Seattle Iyori Makoto, and downtown stakeholders unveiled a new commemorative plaque honoring Seattle’s ties to Japan by eight new cherry blossom trees.

The eight cherry blossom trees were planted this month as part of Waterfront Seattle’s Pike Pine Streetscape and Bicycle Improvements project. This project is creating a safe and vibrant experience for all users with more visible crosswalks, wider sidewalks, protected bike lanes, new trees and landscaping, and artwork, strengthening the east west connections between Capitol Hill to Pike Place Market and our new waterfront.

Sixteen additional cherry blossom trees will be planted at other locations including the Japanese Cultural and Community Center of Washington and the new Waterfront Park, currently under construction.

Speakers include:

Mayor Bruce Harrell, City of Seattle

Iyori Makoto, Consul-General of Japan in Seattle

Karen Yoshitomi, Executive Director of the Japanese Cultural and Community Center of Washington

Councilmember Andrew Lewis, Seattle City Council

Angela Brady, Director of the Office of the Waterfront and Civic Projects
