The Medieval Women`s Choir presents the biblical Song of Songs at St. James Cathedral. Song of Songs (or Song of Solomon) holds a central place in both the Christian and Jewish traditions. It`s imagery of love and longing has inspired poets and composers through the ages. Boston soprano Laurie Monahan is guest soloist for this concert, the culminating event in the choir`s 20th anniversary season. The choir has also commissioned two compositions especially for this program, by Seattle composer Karen P. Thomas and Shira Kammen from Berkeley, CA. Ms. Kammen and Medieval Women`s Choir Artistic Director Margriet Tindemans also play medieval fiddle in the concert.

Jalal Zolfonun, born 1937 in Abadeh, Fars, Iran, is a master of the setar, as well a composer and teacher of Persian music. In 1967, Jalal was accepted into the faculty of the Fine Arts department of Tehran University, where he studied the setar, dedicating himself to the delicate instrument. At age 72, Jalal Zolfonun continues to record a number albums on which he is featured as lead soloist, composer and ensemble player with a number of well-known singers and musicians he has toured worldwide. He lives in Iran, but tours outside in Europe, the US, Canada and Japan with his son, Soheil, and other musicians.

The Zubatto Syndicate is a 12-piece ensemble under the direction of composer and guitarist Andrew Boscardin. Featuring a unique synthesis of reed instruments and electric sounds, brass and stand up bass, Zubatto Syndicate is a highly original take on the Big Band jazz tradition. Seeking to find the musical place where Maria Schneider meets the Mahavishnu Orchestra, and the Roots meet Radiohead by way of Mingus, Zubatto combines detailed arrangements and inventive harmonic ideas with rhythmic settings and idioms atypical of the jazz orchestra, as realized by the some of the top improvising musicians in Seattle.

For thirty years, Seattle Men`s Chorus has sung traditional carols spiced with something new and zany. The parody medley "Heavy Christmas" begins the show with music by the likes of Strauss, Wagner, Grieg, Verdi, Bizet, Khachaturian and Tchaikovsky, with lyrics, and accompanied by Benaroya Hall`s Watjen Concert Organ. This concert is a full bag traditional classics plus surprises from Captain Smarty Pants and the jubilant "Bolly Jolly Holiday," which plays like Bombay Dreams of a white Christmas. Of course, the wacky will be balanced with the sublime as the Chorus` more traditional fare that creates a sound as heavenly as the season. Her lyrics appear on a regular basis in books and thesis papers. Thousands of people who may not even know her name join their voices in "Song of the Soul" around campfires and places of worship. Finally, the stage had been set for women, and particularly for lesbians, to write, produce, record, and issue their own material -- on their own terms.

Each year, the 5th Avenue Theatre's adjudicators visit high schools around Washington State to view their musical productions. Nominations are made in a variety of categories, including overall musical production, lead actors, supporting actors, chorus, ensemble group, direction, music direction, choreography, orchestra, design, stage crew, lobby display, and program design. Each award recipient is invited to give an acceptance speech. In addition, nominees for Outstanding Musical Production, Outstanding Male Actor and Outstanding Female Actor perform on The 5th Avenue Theatre's beautiful stage.

The Seattle Women's Chorus goes back in time to the provocative days of racy pulp fiction and the history of women's music. Taking a fond and campy look at the spicy novels that captured the attention of the underground lesbian community in the '50s and '60s, Vixen Fiction includes love songs, torch songs and songs of forbidden desire. According to one writer, Ann Bannon never considered that her stories would become legends, inspiring countless fledgling dykes to flock to Greenwich Village, dog-eared copies of her books in hand, to find their own Beebos and Lauras and others who shared that unnamable love.

Presented by the Central District Forum for the Arts, Nora Chipaumire’s solo contemporary dance performance, Chimurenga (meaning “struggle” in the Shona language) is a trilogy that describes the personal as well as the collective trauma of surviving war/revolution in Zimbabwe. Her work is inspired by art from her native country such as Shona sculpture and chimurenga music - art that results from the often violent convergence of rural, urban, African, non-African, cultural, economic, colonial and technological ideas. A visionary African contemporary dance artist, her work speaks to the human condition with power, authority, and urgency. Town Halls Global Rhythms presents Hossein Omoumi. Persia born in, Omoumi began his musical education singing with his father. At age 14 he began to study the Ney, the traditional reed flute of Iran. He has performed at theSan Francisco’s World Music Festival, UCLA’s Schoenberg Hall and Wadsworth Theater the Getty Center, in Los Angeles, the World Music Institute and Asia Society in New York, and Theatre de la Ville in Paris. He is now Maseeh Professor in Persian Performing Arts of music at the University of California, Irvine. Part 1 of 2.

Yet Oscar Wilde once remarked that “the only real tragedy in life is getting what you want.” What happens when our dreams come true? Is there a downside to answered prayers? Works on this theme are presented by Michelle Tea and Ben Blum. Sean Nelson, a writer and musician best known as the front man for Harvey Danger, provides music. Presented by Richard Hugo House.

The Seattle Channel is privileged to present as part of its Front Row series, a City Of Seattle Out to Lunch Concert with Carrie Akre. If the name is somewhat familiar to you ~ she's Seattle's darling musical daughter. Carrie is well known for having fronted Seattle bands Hammerbox and Goodness as well as providing lead vocals for the Rockfords which included Mike McCready of Pearl Jam. Akre released her solo debut, Home, in 2000 and followed that up in 2002 with Invitation. She's since released her third cd, Last the Evening.

Featured are the wild and wonderful sounds of the Northwest’s finest players including Irish accordion master Johnny Connolly with fiddler Dale Russ, avant-gardist Amy Denio and Hell’s Bellows!, Toby Hanson, Tom Demski and the Smilin’ Scandinavians, Bulgarian star Milen Slavov with singer Zhivka Papancheva, and harmonica virtuoso Mark Graham (the harmonica is a member of family of free reed instruments to which squeezeboxes belong). Special guest will be Zhongxi Wu, accompanied by Karen Wong, playing the sheng, an ancient Chinese instrument with 21 pipes that is the ancestor of the present day accordion. Composer John Kander and lyricist Fred Ebb are best known for their musicals Cabaret, Chicago, Woman of the Year, Kiss of the Spider Woman, and Curtains. 5th Avenue Theatre Producing Artistic Director David Armstrong explains Kander and Ebbs work on Cabaret, and how music from the Weimar Germany period of the 1920's and early '30's influenced them and other composers like Kurt Weill.
Front Row: Cavalieri's The Play of the Soul and the Body 3/13/2008
Emilio de Cavalieri wrote his sacred opera "The Play of the Soul and the Body" in 1600. As a young man he had grown up in Rome at the time that Michelangelo was painting the Last Judgment in the Sistine Chapel. He created a sacred musical drama depicting the same events: the trumpets of judgment day blaring as the blessed souls make their way to their heavenly reward and the damned are sent to their eternal punishment. This work was recreated by the Seattle Academy of Baroque Opera in November 2007 at St. James Cathedral under the musical direction of Stephen Stubbs and the stage direction and choreography of Anna Mansbridge.

Front Row: Cornish College and Bill Evans Mixin' It Up 2/28/2008
Seattle had a limited modern dance scene when Bill Evans was invited here from Utah in the mid 1970's. Dancers flocked to Seattle to perform with the Bill Evans Dance Company. This program is about that history, focusing on the restaging of Mixin' It Up by the students at Cornish College of the Arts. Bill Evans oversaw the project as a visiting artist. Originally performed in 1979 as "A Double Bill" using the music of Jazz pianist Bill Evans, no relation, the 2007 version is accompanied by students from the Cornish Jazz Ensemble.
