On Friday, Mayor Katie B. Wilson, U.S. Rep. Pramila Jayapal (WA-7), Muckleshoot Tribal Council Chair Donny Stevenson, and artist and community activist Louie Gong spoke at a flag-raising ceremony marking the 12th anniversary of Indigenous Peoples’ Day in Seattle and the first year the city has flown an Indigenous Peoples’ Day flag. They were joined by members of the community. Seattle is the largest U.S. city named after a Native American, Chief Seattle, a 19th-century leader of the Duwamish and Suquamish peoples.
