In 1960, Seattle’s downtown public library made national news as the first branch in America with an escalator. But that paled in comparison to what was coming. In 2004, a shiny new downtown library stunned the world with its dazzling design, dreamed up by Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas. Learn what inspired his eye-catching creation. After 20 years, the library remains a spectacular sight, but now it’s the library’s interior features and collections that are noteworthy. Diane Duthweiler explains.
