Jonathan Batista grew up in the slums of Rio de Janeiro, but he never let his place in life deter his dreams. Batista now holds a place of prominence in the ballet world, but his path to success took work. He worked hard and demonstrated tremendous determination, and he had a bit of good fortune along the way. Recently, he was named Pacific Northwest Ballet’s (PNB) first Black principal dancer, a title he cherishes. For PNB, this is proof of its commitment to diversity at all levels.
