James Banks, a 2016 intern with the Lighting Design Lab, reflects on his experiences as a member of the Seattle City Light team.
Seattle City Light maintains a small Hydroelectric power plant on the Tolt River in Eastern King County. As dams and hydroelectric plants can alter natural processes on rivers, City Light is looking for ways to help compensate and create habitat for spawning salmon and steelhead species.

We Are All Connected promotes Public Power Week.
City Light employees join together to help others in the community by volunteering. So far this year employees have packed emergency kits for kids, rehabilitated a hillside along the Duwamish, collected school supplies for needy kids and cleaned up over 500 pounds of refuge along the Skagit River. And there are more opportunities to come.

Green Up, Seattle City Light`s voluntary program to build renewable energy projects in Seattle, has a new demonstration project that kids are finding quite fun. Beacon Hill overlook uses solar panels as a roof to power some Jefferson Park amenities.

Seattle City Light offers several public tours of the Skagit Hydroelectric Project and the surrounding National Park. This video describes two special tours offered each summer.
It`s estimated City Light loses $3 million a year from stolen power. That is cost that must be picked up from other rate payers. Seattle Fire Department has fought fires due to power theft, and there have been deaths in other cities because of meter tampering. Power theft is a crime and is being prosecuted by the King County Prosecutors Office. City Light is also levying penalty fees of up to $500 against those found to be stealing power, in addition to fees for damaged equipment and the costs of repairing altered wiring service.

Seattle City Light has improved its 80 year tradition of offering the public a tour of the Skagit Hydroelectric Project. Located on Diablo Lake on state highway 20, the new tour will include the traditional boat ride and meal but with a richer educational experience. www.SkagitTours.com for additional information.
Thriftway in West Seattle upgraded their lighting and freezers with help of a grant from City Light, paying for about half the costs. The anticipated savings to Thriftway is estimated to be over $22 thousand a year on the electric bill.

As part of the city`s Race and Social Justice Initiative, City Light employees are encouraging students from Martin Luther King, JR elementary school to consider environmental science as something to study and perhaps seek as a career.
Seattle uses the South Fork Tolt River in eastern King County to generate electricity and as a drinking water supply. Seattle recognizes its operations share natural resources that are vital to fish. As a result, City Light scientists study these fish to determine how its operations on the river can contribute to healthy fish stocks.
Take Winter by Storm is a coordinated effort to prepare the public for winter emergencies. Cities of Seattle, Tacoma; and King, Snohomish, Pierce and Kitsap Counties as well as Puget Sound Energy have combined resources to get the word out that winter emergencies are on the way.
The Historic night lighting of Ladder Creek Falls at the Skagit Hydroelectric Project have been refurbished and rededicated for public viewing. Ladder Creek Falls is a part of the Newhalem Historic District, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
