El Centro de la Raza – one of the region’s premier community organizations – is celebrating its golden anniversary. 50 years ago, Latino and Chicano activists, led by Roberto Maestas, staged a peaceful occupation of the old Beacon Hill Elementary School. Today, that old school is surrounded by new buildings and form what’s called, “The Beloved Community,” with an emphasis on affordable housing, job training, assistance for the elderly, childcare, and a host of other social services.
