CityStream: Life Through the Lens of Al Smith
4/25/20237:08
Photographer Al Smith had a great fondness for Seattle’s Central Area. For 65 years, he chronicled life in that community, from the lively jazz scene of the 1930s and 1940s to community celebrations, parades, and day-to-day life. His rich collection of work documented his West Indian immigrant community and a diverse group of others, including Irish, Japanese, Italian, and African Americans. A few years ago, his family donated his life’s work of 40,000 images to the Museum of History & Industry. Now, the community is honoring Al Smith by displaying his work around Seattle. Producers Connie Thompson, Randy Eng, and Addy Pratt have more.
