Each year, an estimated 1.7 million people suffer from traumatic brain injury (TBI). Two new studies, including one that's local, link TBI to an increased risk of dementia and Parkinson's disease. For those who've endured these injuries it doesn't mean the future is bleak. In fact, doctors say you can fight back by being both physically and socially active, limiting alcohol use and getting quality sleep. Also, prompt treatment for health issues like depression, diabetes and high blood pressure will lower your risk of developing dementia and disease if you've previously suffered a serious brain injury.
