CityStream: Species Restoration: Olympia oysters & Pinto abalone
12/5/20238:05
At one time, an abundance of Olympia oysters and Pinto abalone in Puget Sound provided an abundant food source for Indigenous people and created a dense habitat supportive of marine life. But pollution, overharvest, and habitat loss have decimated both species. Now the Puget Sound Restoration Fund and NOAA’s Conservation Hatchery are working collaboratively to rebuild the species in different parts of Puget Sound. Producer Annabel Cassam has more on the work being done to restore these valuable species that support the marine ecosystem.
