Mayor & SDOT break ground on East Marginal Way corridor improvements

Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell celebrated the beginning of construction on the East Marginal Way Corridor Improvement Project with the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) on Tuesday, April 2, 2024. This transformative work will support industrial freight and cycling needs, as well as enhancing safety, mobility, and economic vitality.

The East Marginal Way Corridor Improvement Project is collaborative efforts with stakeholders including the Port of Seattle, freight haulers, federal and state transportation agencies, and biking communities. The North segment of the project, one of three segments, is currently under construction and will have features like heavy-haul standard streets, protected bike lanes, and upgraded traffic signals, promoting efficiency and separating non-motorized traffic from vehicles.

The project is funded through a mix of local, state, and federal sources, including the 2015 Transportation Levy to Move Seattle. Later this week, the mayor will share details of a draft of a new Seattle transportation levy to meet current safety and maintenance needs of Seattle roads, bridges, sidewalks, and transit infrastructure for years to come.
