Teaching artist Roger Fernandes tells this Yakama story and shares the transformation of a young girl who believes herself to be "ay-ay-esh," stupid and unable to learn. Through the kind guidance of a cedar tree, she learns to weave a basket and teaches her people how to weave the same type of watertight basket, thus becoming their teacher. How do people transform? This story shares one possible aspect of personal growth and change. This lesson is great for learners of all ages, particularly youth grades 3-8.

The Creative Advantage Online Arts video series is created by The Creative Advantage in collaboration with teaching artists and organizations on our Community Arts Partner Roster, Seattle Public Schools, and production partners NFFTY / The Talented Youth, NW Film Forum, and Reel Grrls Pro. The Creative Advantage is a city-wide initiative to establish equitable access to arts education for each and every public school student, made possible through a public-private partnership with Seattle Public Schools, the City of Seattle Office of Arts & Culture, the Seattle Foundation, and 100+ community arts partners and teaching artists.
