CityStream: In Search of the Missing Sand Point Aviators
2/22/20225:46
When two young aviators took off from the old Sand Point Naval Air Station on March 10, 1949, they planned a short fly around. But Ensign Gaston Mayes and Lieutenant, junior grade, Benjamin Vreeland never returned. An extensive search was unsuccessful. But a mother's love refused to let it go. Each summer for 19 years, Nora Mayes traveled from Tennessee to the Pacific Northwest to search for her son. She was never able to bring him home. But as Feliks Banel reports, two local aviation buffs have helped the families of both missing flyers find a bit of closure.
