Councilmember Kshama Sawant (District 3, Central Seattle), chair of the Council's Human Services, Equitable Development and Renters Rights committee, stand with seniors, working families, and young people in her committee to demand Mayor Jenny Durkan protect the Central Area Senior Center and Byrd Barr Place for public use.
For a year, Central District seniors have been expecting that the Mayor's office would complete the transfer of these City-owned properties to the community organizations, so that they would be maintained for public use in perpetuity. Then, the Seattle City Council last fall unanimously adopted Resolution 31856, which set a deadline of March 31 to complete the transfer of the properties, which include the Central Area Senior Center and Byrd Barr Place. The Durkan Administration has now missed the deadline set by the resolution.
