Mayor Bruce Harrell joined Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Deputy Administrator Victoria Salinas, Chief Librarian Tom Fay, and other government leaders to celebrate the awarding of $5.5 million in FEMA funding towards hazard mitigation in Seattle. This is the first cooling center award received in Washington state and the largest award Seattle has received under the FEMA Hazard Mitigation Grant Program.
The grant will support upgrading five additional library branches as part of Seattle’s climate adaption efforts, ensuring they are equipped to serve as cooling and clean-air centers during extreme weather events such as excessive heat or wildfire smoke. This project is also supported by the Washington State Emergency Management Division.
