For the region’s Native Americans, March 8, 1970, is remembered as the day a movement led to major change. That morning, a group of people, led by Indigenous activist Bernie Whitebear, staged a peaceful occupation of the old Fort Lawton Army base. The group wanted to reclaim land for Native people. Negotiations led to a 20-acre parcel and paved the way for the Daybreak Star Indian Cultural Center. Nearly a half-century later, the center continues to serve an important role, providing many vital services while also offering an important cultural connection to the area’s Indigenous population. Feliks Banel reports.
