Signal boxes are artist Desmond Hansen’s streetside canvas
CityStream: Desmond Hansen: Seattle’s Signal Box Artist

Pulling up to an intersection is rarely memorable. But lately, drivers are being greeted by a flash of color and a familiar face! Artist Desmond Hansen is responsible for the change. Armed with an arsenal of aerosol paint, he uses drab signal boxes as his canvas and transforms them with famous faces. He started with Jimi Hendrix, then moved on to other musicians like Prince, Eddie Vedder, and Chris Cornell. His collection of more than 60 boxes also includes athletes, civil rights activists, and community leaders. Judging by the compliments Hansen receives, many people say they hope SDOT continues to commission his work! Producer Pete Cassam takes a look.
