Mochitsuki: A Japanese New Year’s tradition
CityStream: Mochitsuki, a Japanese New Year’s Tradition
1/5/20175:29

The mochitsuki, an annual gathering to pound sweet, glutinous rice into mochi (a soft rice cake) is a key part of the New Year's celebration for many Japanese and Japanese American communities. Making mochi is an all-day process and offers an opportunity to socialize and gather with friends and family. Seattle's Japanese Cultural & Community Center of Washington holds an annual mochitsuki celebration, where people of all ages try their hand-and strength-at making various styles of mochi.
